British Transport Police placement at Anchor House

On Monday 11th June 2012, four trainees from the British Transport Police joined us for a week placement at Anchor House. These placements take place several times a year, and help build on relations between Anchor House, our homeless residents, and the police. As part of their training the police cadets have visited various communities and are aiming to build on and ease community relations.

Speaking about their time spent at Anchor House, the cadets said by meeting our residents they were able to gain a very valuable insight into the problems they may be facing. They were also “shocked by just how many homeless people there are on our streets”.

The week-long placement gave the cadets the opportunity to be exposed to homelessness and the needs of homeless people. The insight has helped them to understand how homeless charities such as Anchor House are doing their utmost to turn around the lives of these people.

Matthew said “Speaking to Aggrie Chikiwa (Anchor House’s Head of Education and Employment, and former resident) was inspirational. To see where he came from and how much he has achieved with the help of Anchor House and the staff group here is amazing.”

After discussing our Aspirational Programme with Eve O’Keefe (Lifestyle Architect) Stefan said “My time at Anchor House made me realise the effectiveness of the organisation, and I strongly believe that their programmes should be expanded nationally.

More places like Anchor House throughout the UK would go a long way to helping social problems and homelessness.”
