100mile bike ride to break cycle of homelessness

6th August 2014
On Sunday 10th August, four staff members from Caritas Anchor House, a homeless charity in East London, will be gearing up for an epic 100mile bicycle relay.

On top of their usual jobs of fundraising (Kate and Zoe), working with rough sleepers (Jamie) and heading up Reception (Malik), they will be taking on the Prudential RideLondon Business Relay.

Now in its second year, this impressive bike ride starts at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, before heading west through the capital to the scenic Surrey countryside and ending with a hero’s welcome on The Mall.

“Here at Caritas Anchor House, we’re committed to doing everything we can to help our residents, and this is a great example of that,” said Keith Fernett, the charity’s Director, who is doing his own fundraising trek in the foothills of Annapurna later in the year.

“The team have been training hard and they’re eager to reach their target of £1000, which will help us to deliver the best services to those with the very least.”

Based in East London, Caritas Anchor House provides shelter to over 220 homeless people each year, giving them the skills and support they need to build a better life for themselves. There are often a chain of events that lead to homelessness, but the charity aims to break that cycle by providing support and guidance to those most in need.

“Every donation, however much it is, has the potential to make a big difference to someone without a home,” adds Keith. “If you’ve got a spare few minutes, visit their JustGiving page and show your support.”

To sponsor the Caritas Anchor House RideLondon team, visit their JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/RideLondonTeamCAH or text HOPE CYCLE to 70300 to give £3. Caritas Anchor House will receive 100% of the donation.

EDITOR'S NOTES:

Caritas Anchor House is a nationally acclaimed flagship project addressing the root causes of homelessness – such as poor education, substance misuse, mental health problems, domestic violence or a history of offending – and create sustainable solutions that ensure the people we help will never find themselves in that situation again.

It is a registered charity providing accommodation for up to 220 single homeless people each year aged 19 to 65. It gives so much more than just a roof over their heads and provides a wide range of accredited vocational training courses in construction, electrical, plumbing and distance learning for both residents and the local community. In practical terms, this means not only giving our residents the skills and confidence they need to rebuild their lives and move on to independent living, but also serving the community as a whole.

The charity is located in Canning Town, in the London Borough of Newham, the third most deprived borough in England and Wales.
